While having a deck has its many advantages, it’s a good idea to consider the different weather conditions in your area and what should be done to get the most out of your investment. Under decking systems, or under deck ceiling, provide a functional low-maintenance outdoor living environment in rain or shine. By adding a custom built under decking system, you can take full advantage of the space under your deck for things like storage or additional seating space. You will also experience additional benefits such as drainage systems and a place to keep items that are not waterproof dry.

Under Deck Ceiling Options

There are basically two types of under decking systems. One that is installed above the joists but below the decking boards and the other that is installed directly on the underside of the exposed joists beneath the deck. The first one listed has to be installed prior to installation of the decking but has the advantage of helping preserve the joists’ condition and providing an open area below to place lighting, fans, or other components that use electricity. If a home owner wants a more finished ceiling, like stained tongue and groove or finished PVC then this first option would be ideal. The second option is much more simplistic with the ability to be applied directly to the bottom of the exposed joists. Both options are installed at a slight pitch and direct rainwater to the outside of the deck which is then dispersed via gutters and downspouts.
