We fully removed the previous deck and rebuilt it using the existing footings. Since there were no records of the original footings, we had to excavate beside them to verify they reached the 42″ frost depth required by code. Interestingly, the fence posts extended through the framing and into 3 feet of concrete—something the inspector found particularly amusing.
